The Replicated Game

Call of Duty: World at War was a huge letdown for me.

“Why?” you ask.

Because it’s nothing but a clone of the epic we come to know as Call of Duty 4.  If you really stop to think about it, Call of Duty: World at War is nothing but Call of Duty 4, only with WW2 skins and guns.  To me, the only thing that really held it together was the stellar Russian campaign (don’t even get me started on the American campaign).  If one doesn’t realize this simple fact, then I submit that you don’t even know what a good game is.

Now, because of some odd switching game, Infinity Ward is up next to making the new Call of Duty game.  Rumor has it that it’ll be a sequel to Call of Duty 4, meaning that it’ll be modern warfare and no WW2 (thankfully).  What I think, though, is that Infinity Ward desperately needs to make the new Call of Duty a fresh and exciting game.  This means that it shouldn’t be a meaningless clone of Call of Duty 4.  To really be groundbreaking, they must think outside of the box and make new features, improve the graphics, and overall make the game new.

If Infinity Ward can’t beat their own hit, and continues to crank out clones of Call of Duty 4, then the series will be no better than the Madden series.

you can’t hold IW responsible for CoD WaW. in fact, I’m pretty sure I read an article about an IW dev ripping apart the treyarch producer of WaW for using IW’s name too much in a media release. I think IW hates what treyarch did with CoD.

I can’t give a full testimonial right now. I picked up the game yesterday and played co-op and multiplayer. I don’t think it looks very good, but it’s a solid game for the $40 I spent. it feels more like WWII skin placed on CoD 4, with poor animations and uglier graphics, but playing the single player campaign with two of my friends last night was completely welcome and awesome. Jack Bauer screaming in my headphones was cool too.

I blame IW for letting Treyarch try and make Call of Duty games. If IW really hates what Treyarch did with Call of Duty, then why are they still letting them switch off and make games? It’s silly.

I don’t think Infinity Ward has a say in the matter — a deal has been worked out with Activision, who’re proponents of quantity over quality, and intend to milk the franchise every year.

yeah, it’s all Activision on this one. they own the publishing rights to CoD. from what I’ve read, the Activision CEO is a real douchebag deluxe.
