With expansions, a company sets out to improve the game that they have built. It has been about four months and I feel it’s a safe to say we have gotten a good taste of Northrend in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. While Blizzard hasn’t perfected World of Warcraft just yet, here are some things things they improved upon for the WoW community.
I found most exciting of all is that they greatly improved the classes that were not as strong as the in previous expansions. Blizzard moved to the mentality, “bring the player, not the class” and I feel that they made a large step in the right direction. While not everything is perfect yet, you would be hard pressed for 99% of the current content to need one type of class make up to be successful. If you want to be a Balance Druid and deal damage in Moonkin form, you will be right up there with the best of them if you put in the effort to know your class. No more are the days of playing your character to the fullest and still not even coming close to other classes in terms of damage or tanking or healing.
I know some may not like me talking about this addition second since it was pretty huge, but the addition of the Death Knight class was very cool. Death Knights have a slew of cool abilities that just make you feel like you are a god. Pulling characters from across the field into your grips never gets old.
The big taboo with many MMOs are that they are a grind fest. While there still are quests where you have to go kill X about of mobs, they are accompanied by more unique quests where you can ride an assortment of vehicles, travel trough time, and blow up mammoths. That’s right, mammoths, Micheal Bay would be proud. This makes questing and leveling multiple characters not feel like such a drag.
Lastly, this generation, Achievement Points are everywhere. With gamer scores and all other types of gaming rankings it’s no surprise that WoW implemented one of it’s very own. While some of the achievements are silly (getting a hair cut) this system has set the ground work for allowing Blizzard to make this an extra reward system on it’s own. For example, why just down a boss and get its loot when you could go for a harder achievement and get even greater loot? This lets a game with out a difficulty settings have goals for players of all levels to try and achieve.
While Wrath did not launch with a perfect game, Blizzard took a great step in the right direction. They have put in the foundation to really build upon a great system. I excitingly await to experience what they have up their sleeve in the next content patch. I’ll see y’all in Uldar, for the HORDE!
