Breaking Street Date…The ‘In’ Thing In Gaming?

Posted on Mon, Jun 9, 2008 in Sony PS3

It happened earlier in the year with GTAIV, and now it’s happened again with the hugely anticipated stealth epic, Metal Gear Solid 4. Will we ever be able to get away from certain game stores breaking the street date of massively popular titles? Probably not, but despite the worry of piracy that would normally accompany an early release, Konami are not worried in the slightest. They made this comment regarding the issue.

“Unfortunately, these things happen. As much as we like see that no one breaks streets dates, no one can monitor every single moment that a title gets packed up for shipment and when its on its way to the stores. The store could be at fault as well, for letting someone get a copy before the street date.”

It’s really surprising that this is the attitude that Konami have on the subject; especially considering the massive amount of hype they have created for the game. Perhaps this is due to the Blu-Ray method of storage, and how hard it is to pirate from. Most likely though, is that Konami have bigger things to worry about right now, such as securing plot details online, and helping the launch of Metal Gear Online. Lets hope that nothing gets spoiled online by these lucky people, before the June 12th release of the game, as that would disappoint many fans. The wait is nearly over, couldn’t these people have waited 3 more days?

    MGS spoilers have been leaked…

Also what is surprising about Konami’s stance on this? There is no way piracy is going to effect a large chunck of their sales due to the BR drive, and as it is said in the article, most broken street dates are done by stores.
