Exhibit: Velvet Assassin

Replay Studios’ upcoming Xbox 360/PC WWII stealth action game, Velvet Assassin, is inspired by the fascinating historic events and unbreakable spirit of British secret agent Violette Szabo, a super spy who perpetrated war from the shadows in the forties. Players will take on the role of Violette Summer, the “assassin” of the title’s namesake, and head into enemy territory without any help from her higher-ups at the British Government.

We’re digging the art style, as the contrast between the grim gray grit and highly saturated color compliments the abundant environmental detail of a war-torn 1945. “The lighting and coloring of the game combine to give the game a more illustrative and expressive look,” remarks Sascha Jungnickel, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Hamburg-based Replay Studios, while explaining the graphic style in a developer commentary.

It remains to be seen how the game feels during play, but early videos depict traditional sneaking similar to Splinter Cell or Metal Gear, but with less modest shooting.  Jungnickel claims that players will “hide in dynamic shadows, not seen in many other [fixed shadow] sneaking games.”  With a bundle of missions, an emphasis on stealth but the allowance of a quick trigger finger, and the concept of an assassin in a disturbing looking Nazi Germany, the third person hunt for Hitler’s Reich should be good. Look for it this fall.
