Apple Inc. has released a press invite for a September 9 event entitled “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it.” The event is part of the annual ritual of new iPods prior to the holiday season and comes as no surprise to anyone anywhere.

The Rolling Stone song-themed event will likely include iPods with cameras, as evidenced for the past several months and hopefully MMS for iPhone users in the United States.

The device in the promotional graphic is definitely an iPod Touch (there is no such thing as an iTouch), a newer device with more RAM and a faster processor, in-line with the iPhone 3GS would make an excellent and logical upgrade to a device that people don’t think of when they say “Why doesn’t Apple make a video game console or handheld?”

iTunes 9 would also be a likely announcement.
