Gordon Hall, Vice President of Rockstar Leeds, stated that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars would be the largest portable franchise entry Rockstar has ever made, in an interview with Nintendo Power.
Two portable Grand Theft Auto games have been released for handhelds: 2005’s Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories and 2006’s Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories, both on PSP. Chinatown Wars is being developed as a Nintendo DS exclusive (an announcement that surprised us last E3).
Despite the hardware limitations of the DS, the city will be ‘far bigger’ in geographic territory and gameplay depth than it’s predecessors on the significantly-stronger PSP.
“Chinatown Wars is much bigger than anything we have ever done before: more odd jobs, deeper missions, and more moments of over-the-top action. We have a huge interaction with the Rockstar Social Club, a massive narcotics trafficking game that would stand alone on its own. The list goes on and on; this thing is huge. We are very proud of all of the PSP games we have made, especially the two GTA games, but this game is far bigger,”
Hall said.
Presumably his claim that it’s bigger than anything ‘we’ have ever done before is in reference to his studio, Rockstar Leeds, who crafted the previous two handheld Grand Theft Auto games.
Chinatown Wars is dated for March 17 in North America and March 20 in Europe.
