E308: New Wolfenstein Unveiled

Posted on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 in News, Nintendo DS, PC, Sony PSP, Xbox 360

It looks like (though we aren’t 100% sure) that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine is being used beyond the upcoming James Bond shooter. Activision recently showed off the newest version of Wolfenstein, something that’s been lightly chatted about, but still managed to surprise.

The shooter looks to be a combination of first and third person shooting with a hint of tactical action blended in, a la Rainbow Six Vegas, and, of course, Quantam of Solace, the aforementioned 007 game. The slick visuals and grim night scenes are reminiscent of CoD4 and the upcoming CoD: World at War, and as we said, we can’t be sure that it’s the same inner-workings that’s fueling the game, but damn if it doesn’t have a resemblance.

The high-tech, sci-fi weaponry has us interested in one thing, especially: is this Infinity Ward’s rumored science fiction game? The publisher and engine-look-alike makes sense enough that it could be.

We’ll have more details about the upcoming Activision published shooter as soon as we can eek some info out of the show.

They have already stated it is going to be using a upgraded version of the Doom3 Engine (as with Quake Wars) – probably with enhancements from the upcoming idTech5 engine. Also it is being developed by Raven, not Infinity Ward.
