Last year, Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference disappointed. They had so much they could have announced, and yet Wii Sports: Resort, Wii Motion Plus and Wii Music made up the largest portion of their time on stage.
This year though, the balance was near 50/50, with Nintendo displaying game after game after game, with very few hiccups. Opening and closing with a Mario title, New Super Mario Bros Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a great decision, and counting Mario and Luigi and Mario Vs Donkey Kong, there were 4 fully fledged Wii and DS Mario titles announced. On the other side of the spectrum, the Vitality Sensor could not have been predicted, and at this point seems more like a bad joke from Nintendo than a serviceable platform for gaming.
A large amount of the show focused on the Nintendo DSi, integrating Facebook into the camera app of the DSi, and a new Wario Ware title, featuring a mini game creation mode. And for every Style Savvy or Women’s Murder Club announcement, there was a Golden Sun DS or a Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.
The improvement has been huge, although after that infamous Wii Music demonstration, ending on the huge surprise of Metroid: Other M was sure to bring Nintendo back with a chance at best conference this E3. The 50/50 split of casual and hardcore was a great way to service the whole market Nintendo is aiming for, all we need now is that rumoured (and somewhat confirmed) Zelda title for Wii.
