E309: Wii Vitality Sensor Announced, Wait What?

Posted on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 in News, Nintendo Wii

During Nintendo’s E3 keynote Nintendo President Satoru Iwata came out to wow us with a new hardware announcement, only this time the announcement left me scratching my head. This new “Vitality Sensor” peripheral snaps onto the bottom of the Wiimote and has a pulse monitor that you insert your finger into. So it’s a pulse monitor.. for a gaming system… what’s next a blood glucose monitor?

I can understand a device like this being bundled with a WiiFit style game, the problem is tha no compatible games were announced. Instead, Iwata-san just talked about how games have generally been created to increase your pulse, and now they can be created to calm you down or even put you to sleep… you know sort of like the keynote this year.

Anyways no pricing or release date was announced, just that this was a peek at Nintendo’s future. If this is the way things are going I may be reaching for that snooze button instead of waking up to experience it. Unless of course that is the next peripheral to come out of Nintendo HQ.
