Laminar Research is a company that is big on releasing games based on physics. One of their big titles is the X-Plane series of games, with X-Plane 9 just recently having been released for the iPhone. The games makes huge use of the built-in accelerometer of the phone, you’ll be using the iPhone itself as a flight yoke: tilting forward to dive, pulling back to climb, and tilting side-to-side to control ailerons.
The original title was released for Macs and PCs and came on a whopping set of 6 dual-layer DVD’s. The iPhone version weighs in at 6.2MB as opposed to the 70G of the computer version. The creator of the game, Austin Meyer, has made assurances that the physics-based engine of the game is completely intact for the iPhone, running at about 95% when compared to the original.
For all those flight simulator fans out there, X-Plane 9 is now available for download through the Apple App Store for $9.99 USD.
