Just when you thought you had finished the fight, Bungie announced a stand-alone expansion to its monolithic Halo franchise at the Tokyo Game Show today. All signs pointed to a major upcoming Halo expansion announcement at TGS, especially after Bungie’s E3 reveal was canceled last minute.
Halo 3: Recon will feature a brand new campaign that fills in the story gap just prior to Halo 3. “But wasn’t Master Chief hurtling through space at that point?” Good question, glad you asked. This time around, you will be playing as an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) through the single-player portion.
The expansion will also include several new multiplayer maps, complete with all of the forge, file-sharing, and community options you’re used to with Halo 3.
We will just have to wait and see how Halo 3: Recon is received without Master Chief as the protagonist (see also: the backlash against Halo 2 Arbiter missions). Speaking of waiting, we won’t be seeing this game until sometime in “Fall 2009,” but you can hit the jump to see the new trailer.
