It goes without saying that The Dark Knight has found gigantic success in theaters. Within four weeks of it’s July 18th release in North America, The Dark Knight has grossed over $441 million dollars domestically. Breaking records across the board. If you have not seen Christopher Nolan’s second batman film, the Nukoda staff highly recommends that you do.
Yet, there is much more going on under the surface. As we all are happily buying tickets and are awestruck by Heath Ledger performance, if you happened to glance over at the IMDB’s top 250 movies of all time, you would have seen The Dark Knight at number one. Uh, you would have seen The Dark Knight at the number one spot. Batman had dethroned The Godfather (personal favorite) and held the top spot for 24 days. Oddly enough, The Godfather recently had gained a surprisingly large amount of 1/10 rankings after the Dark Knight hit theaters. Shenanigans?
It would appear that Dark Knight fans had purposely ranked down The Godfather so to put their faviorite movie at the top. If this was a war, the Batman fans had fired the first shots. However, soon after the fact, Godfather fans shot back and with great vengeance. As of the time of this post, The Dark Knight sits at the number three spot, under both The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption.
While the lengths that fanboys (and fangirls) will go for their favorite IP is beyond measure, it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. Will IMDB fix their ranking system, or will they let this continue? I for one would love to see IMDB rework their voting system as to reflect more accurate public opinions.
