Myst, Reviewed [DS]

Myst, the classic PC adventure game, came out when I was quite young. I remember watching my dad play but I could never figure out any of the puzzles. Riven (the sequel) was a little easier, because I was a little older and because my dad bought the walkthrough.

I was in Best Buy looking for a new strategy game to hold my attention for a long period of time (I had just finished Lost in Blue 3) and stumbled across Myst for the DS. Ironically enough, it was just a day or two after talking with my fiance’s mom who said that she would definitely buy Myst or a game like it if it came to the DS. Remembering how young I was when I played before, I picked it up, hoping it would keep me entertained as much as Lost in Blue 3 had.

Boy did I feel stupid. I couldn’t figure anything out! The fact that I was young before had almost nothing to do with it, I still couldn’t figure out any of the puzzles at all! I confess I used a walkthrough to get through it, and finished it that day. From other reviews I’ve read of this port of the game, it’s not the best. I definitely got a little frustrated using the stylus to move around instead of the D-pad (which is how I usually prefer to move) and would end up in places on accident because I didn’t tap the area just right.

For those of you out there who are Myst lovers, it’s exactly like it was on the PC with one extra Age added at the very end as a bonus. I accidentally quit before I saved so I would have had to go through a bunch of stuff to get back there and play through it. I definitely didn’t feel like doing that, but what I saw of it looked cool. It was snowy like on a mountaintop which is an interesting choice considering the rest of the Ages. If you were a fan of the game on the PC and have missed it, read a few more reviews before you spend the money on it, you may just want to play it on your computer again, the extra Age may not be worth it.

On a side note, I love that the box for the DS says it’s for ages “3+”, if a 3 year-old beats the game without a walkthrough, this 22 year-old will then feel really dumb :-P
