New iTunes Update Includes Games for iPhone

Posted on Sat, Jul 12, 2008 in News

Long lines and serious activation issues marked the release of the eagerly anticipated 3G-enabled iPhone.  With a faster network and sleeker design, folks poured into the outlets of wireless carriers around the globe, to obtain a device known for its ability to communicate.. well.. around the globe!

What fun is surfing the web, checking your email and listening to WiiSpot and DS Life without the ability to play games?  Well, fortunately for you, iTunes 7.7 is live, so hit the apps store ASAP!  It’s time to break down some of the “hot picks:”

  • Super Monkey Ball: Guide a cute monkey encased in a plastic ball by tilting your iPhone to take him through slopes and turns, and reach a goal line within a set time. ($9.99)
  • Texas Hold ‘Em: See: every other mobile version of this immensely popular poker variant. ($4.99)
  • Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D: Speed through 12 thrilling tracks and multiple environments, battling zany opponents with 8 devastating weapons. ($9.99)
  • Tap Tap Revenge: Tap notes coming down screen and violently jerk your iPhone during key moments for multipliers, in the vein of Guitar Hero. (Free)
  • Shazam: This isn’t a game, but it’s certainly worth checking out! This downright sweet application will identify any piece of music by holding the iPhone to its source.  It is essentially ZiT from Grand Theft Auto IV: identifying your music, minus Lazlow. (Free for a limited time)
It’s also worth checking out “remote” — because nothing impresses your friends like remotely controlling your blasting music from anywhere in your house.  The launch lineup doesn’t include any “must owns,” but our favorite application happens to be free. What is it you ask?  It’s called “light” — it simply and brilliantly turns your screen bright white, so you can handle the darkest of situations.  Seriously, how many times have you been mining underground, surfing the web in 3G (provided you aren’t mining in a wi-fi hotspot), and need to illuminate the piece of rock you are chiseling away at?

I don’t know if a white JPEG constitutes “brilliance”, particularly because I can do it without an app, but it’s an alright idea, for sure.

I’m contemplating one of the racing games, probably Cro-Mag, I think. Review for it, someday!

I beg to differ about the lack of must haves. I certainly feel that Super Monkey Ball is a definite must have! Granted it takes some getting used to the control, but once you got it, it’s tough to put this game down. It’s an absolute blast.

I’m really disliking the motorcycle game. It’s far too difficult, and sensitive.
