Back in April, we reported that Grand Theft Auto IV had overtaken Nintendo 64’s classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as the number one ranked game on gamerankings.com (an aggregate site that averages scores of multiple review outlets).
The few games that have managed to surpass Nintendo’s 1998 masterpiece usually fall back behind once more reviews come in, usually not holding up to Zelda’s unprecedentedly high 97.613% for long.
When Grand Theft Auto IV eclipsed this score back in April, it stayed on top for a long while. We wrongly figured that Rockstar Games had stolen the throne from Nintendo for the highest ranked game ever.
We were mistaken.
Ocarina of Time has overtaken Grand Theft Auto IV, which dropped to 97.419%.
Grand Theft Auto IV is on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been re-released on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.
Another competitor, crushed by the undefeated, but almost defeated, legend of the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

As soon as you start counting game rating averages, I quit. What does it matter which game has .00000000000000000000000000000000056 points more than another?

@Mitch: You may not care, but many people do. And even if it doesn’t determine the quality of a game (and I won’t say it does, it’s merely a #) it’s still interesting to see today’s top games fighting it out with the untouched classic, Ocarina of Time.
Many people are interested to see if anything will ever pass it on aggregate rating sites like gamerankings. We thought something had, but again it was crushed.
It’s just interesting to follow

It’s hard because 1. You are assigning a quantifier to an unquantifiable experience, and 2. Every single outlet has a different definition of their review scale.
Like a 4/5 star game on Nukoda would be an 80% on an aggregate site, yet our definition is an awesome game with a few minor issues easily overlooked…which is probably closer to a 90% or something. But the problem is there’s no right answer.
And what about outlets that have changed their review policy/system since Ocarina of Time? Or outlets that aren’t around anymore and new ones that are?
I think it’s interesting to note, like Ross, but I just wonder if it actually means anything.
Also, Ocarina of Time fucking rules.
