Old XBL Servers to be shut down April 15

The servers maintaining online play for original Xbox games over Xbox LIVE will be shut down April 15 this year, said Microsoft spokesman Major Nelson in a blog post today.

“I wanted to let you know that on April 15, 2010 Microsoft will discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox 1 games playable on Xbox 360,” Nelson said. This means that unless you’ve got a 360, you’re going to cut off from the wide world of Xbox LIVE.

Nelson also said the next step “in this process will be to turn off auto-renewals for those members who only use Xbox LIVE on a v1 Xbox.” There were no specifics as to how many of those accounts actually existed.

Microsoft has stated that maintaining these services has prevented the service from expanding further. Nelson ended the blog post with the comment that cutting the Xbox originals out of the LIVE loop “will allow unprecedented flexibility for future features.”

If you’re still playing on the big black box, it’s time to shell out if you want to keep going.
