OXM and Variety Report Gearbox Working on Halo Game

Posted on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 in News, Xbox 360

Both Official Xbox Magazine and now Variety are reporting that Brothers in Arms developers Gearbox may be taking over the reigns of Microsoft’s flagship franchise since Bungie declared its independence from Microsoft last year.

Variety’s Ben Fritz reported that a source close to the developer confirmed that Gearbox “has definitely had conversations with Microsoft about doing a new Halo game and is very excited at the prospect.” Fritz was careful to point out that his source said “there was no deal in place.”

Aside from Brothers in Arms, Gearbox has a good experience in solid FPS games. The company worked on the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved. Based in Plano, Texas, and have also worked on Half-Life expansions Opposing Force and Blue Shift. They also worked the retail releases of Counter-Strike and Condition Zero.

Looks like the franchise might be in good hands if this rumour turns out to have some truth to it.

Rest assured, this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this story.
