The sequel to the massively overlooked RPG Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3 has been announced for North America. Developers Atlus recently announced at the Anime Expo that it will hit store shelves on December 9th, barely a year after the 2007 Japanese RPG.
Persona 3 was an amazing game, which received praise all around from critics. It melded together aspects of different RPG’s with a social dating sim to create a truly brilliant game.
Persona 3 was as Japanese as they get, taking place primarily in a school, albeit one that changes into a randomly generated dungeon when the clock strikes twelve. Add this to the dating, or social link aspect of the game-which levels up your Persona fighter-and you have a quirky game that appeals to a very niche market.
If you fit into this niche, then Persona 4, just like its predecessor, will be an essential purchase, despite being on the aged PS2.
We’ll have to wait until December to see whether Persona 4 can top the fantastic game it follows, but even if it doesn’t, it will probably be the last great PS2 game, closing the chapter on the RPG fan’s console of choice. Those that are in Europe will definitely have to wait a bit longer; P3 only just came out this year in PAL territories, so those that enjoyed the first game will probably have to wait until 2009 to play a Euro version of the game.
Otherwise, dust off your PS2 (if your unlucky enough to have a 40GB), when Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 4 hits store shelves on December 9th in North America, bundled with an exclusive copy of the Soundtrack of the game. Until then, check the official site at http://www.atlus.com/persona4 for more info on this great looking game.
