Podcast Fever

Posted on Wed, May 28, 2008 in News

Imagine a talk radio show dedicated to your favourite subject. Now imagine being able to fast forward, rewind, and archive these shows. Now try and wrap your head around the notion of this show appearing in your music library and automatically syncing with your portable listening device without having to do more than click “subscribe.” Podcasting says hi: rejoice.

Podcasting started when an electronics company called I2Go created a service named “MyAudio2Gom” in 2000, featuring daily audio news feeds for use with any MP3 player. The service could be used to automatically download specific feeds every morning; this was the first application of podcasting as we know it today. The popularity of podcasts increased dramatically in 2004, when the number of Google hits for “podcast” increased from 100,000 to 100,000,000 over the year.

Fast forward to 2008, and I’m obsessed with podcasts. I’m going to lay down some of my favourites – hopefully introducing podcast people to a few new ones, or introducing new people to podcasts! Without further delay, the list of what steamrolls into my iTunes library on a weekly basis:

*denotes a podcast with no single page containing all updates. Each page linked is the most recent update at publishing time.

All of the above podcasts can also be found on iTunes, by searching their respective names in the iTunes store. Best of all, they’re free! Happy listening readers! I hope you can overcome the formidable listening-to-podcast-while-reading multitasking duo, because we want you to stay tuned to Nukoda!

  2. Dasme Says:

I was about to say the same thing. Would be nice for our ‘casts to atleast get a mention ;)

  3. Mitchell Dyer Says:

What about Fast Karate for the Gentleman?!

  4. Fatchins Says:

I would have to add the PSM3 Podcast, Kojima Productions Report and Orange Lounge Radio to this list….on top of the two mentioned above of course…

  5. Ross Arbour Says:

@ Mitch: Fast Karate is not game specific, it deals mostly with anime and offtopic. It does come to my itunes, but it’s not just about games so I excluded it.

I consider these the essentials, there are more I listen to as well!

@ Dasme: I didn’t want people to think I was just pimping our podcast — they’re there now!

  6. Mitchell Dyer Says:

What? It deals with a TON of gaming.

  7. Ross Arbour Says:

    @ Mitch: but not exclusively

GFW Radio is the best 1up podcast and it is not even listed!

  9. Ross Arbour Says:

    @OFCRAZED: I don’t doubt that it’s good, but I don’t listen to it, and that’s what’s in my itunes.

Check it out, if you like the other 1up podcasts. It really isn’t that PC exclusive now that the guys work on all of 1up. When they kid around they are funny and when they are serious they are really insightful.

I’ll certainly give it a listen. A game is a game, regardless of platform. I may not be a PC gamer but I’m sure that it is worth a listen. Thanks!
