The PS3 will soon have its own special DivX codec in the future firmwares. The Xbox 360 has it, and so the PS3 wants to jump on the bandwagon. This new DivX coded will allow data to be compacted into small chunks of data while still remaining in amazing quality upon playback.

Although the Xbox 360 has its own version of DivX support, it is very limited. The PS3 is DivX certified which allows every DivX compatible file to be played through your PS3. This includes all your… ahem… torrents.
The compression is all new which allows videos to load faster taking time off the PS3’s brain while loading cut-scenes. So the game will load faster.
The new DivX will be in future firmwares but no official release date has been set.
