Valve have announced the new game mode for Left 4 Dead 2 they have been keeping secret for so long and the aim is to, well, scavenge.
Named Scavenger mode, the survivors have to find petrol cans scattered around the area, of which there are 16 in each map, and they then have to take to the generator to fill it.
The competitive edge comes from the fact the survivors have two minutes to get as many petrol cans as they can before time runs out, with each gathered can adding 20 seconds to the timer. And whilst they are doing this it is the job of the special infected to stop them.
Life is made harder by a number of things. The special infected can destroy fuel cans, making the Spitter one of your worst enemies when on the hunt for fuel. Added to that is the fuel takes time to pour into the generator, almost half the time needed to heal.
Petrol cans are placed in strategic places in the maps. Harder to reach places such as roof tops may have three cans there but there you are a sitting duck for the special infected. On the other hand some cans may be tucked away in corners making it harder for survivors to find.
Valve say the new mode is aimed at creating fast, competitive gameplay that is more frantic than versus mode and from the footage so far they are not wrong.
