The third major incarnation in Tapulous’ popular Tap Tap Revenge series hit the App Store last night. Arguably, the most significant change in this new version is the inclusion of downloadable content, leading to Tap Tap Revenge 3 finally becoming the game Tapulous wanted it to be from the start, with a complete in-game store to buy all kinds of licensed music tracks to play.
For those of you unaware of the Tap Tap series, the game is a rhythm based game, where ‘tappers’ scroll down the screen, and need to be hit when they match up with the scoring pads – think Dance Dance Revolution.
Before OS3.0 enabled in-app purchases, music pack were only available for Tap Tap buy spending $4.99 on a whole new game, themed with one artist – such as Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Weezer and Dave Matthews Band.
However, in Tap Tap Revenge 3, there are almost 50 bundles of music that can be purchased in game, with more being promised. There are for example, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Blink 182, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Tiesto and many more. 6 track bundles are sold for $2.99/£1.79, and 2 track bundles for 99¢/59p. As well as the songs however, Tapulous has also created unique artwork for each artist, that ‘re-skins’ the playing screen when playing a song from that artist.
This also explains why Tapulous has charged for TTR3, when previous Tap Tap Revenge games have been free. The purchase price, which is the smallest available, means that Tapulous can use in-app purchases, rather than being unable to charge for them under Apple’s rules if they listed the game as free.
Aside from the range of optional music to buy, Tap Tap Revenge 3 also mantains the tradition of having free indie songs, with over 100 of these on the store at purchase. As always, Tapulous plans on adding free music every week for users to download. TTR3 also has a full and hugely enjoyable online section with various multiplayer modes, making use of push notifications, avatars to choose from, and a number of different social features like in-game chat.
If you’ve never played a Tap Tap Revenge game, Tap Tap Revenge 2.6 is free and will give you an impression of the sequel. Otherwise, Tap Tap Revenge 3 is available for 99¢, and with the use of in-app purchases, as well as free songs, it is a must for any rhythm game fan.
