Take-Two Software released the official opening week sales numbers of Grand Theft Auto IV. We’ve been hotly anticipating the raw data, anxiously awaiting to see if the boys at Rockstar could give the boys at Bungie a run for their money (quite literally, with reference to Halo 3’s record breaking launch).
The highest critically acclaimed game of all time also had the best opening week in entertainment history, earning an impressive $500 million dollars (US) across the GTA-lovin’ galaxy.
“We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player’s experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well. Grand Theft Auto IV’s first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level,”
said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two Interactive.
Developed by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto IV is available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Rockstar: You keep doing what needs to be done to push gaming to new frontiers.
